LORAIN - Essie Queena (nee Gordon) Smith, 94, departed this temporary home on Feb. 1, 2015, after a brief illness.
Essie was born Aug. 14, 1920, in Walnut Lake, Arkansas. 
She had lived in Lorain since 1953 and was a member at Church on the North Coast. She worked with Lorain County Family and Children Services and over the years fostered 68 children in Lorain County. She enjoyed cooking, fishing and family.
Essie's legacy is survived by her sons, William M. Ward, Tedario Smith, Olvin (Michelle) Smith and James Smith, all of Lorain, and Melvin Smith of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters, Emma Jean (Sam) Spraggins of Lorain, and LaJoyce Smith-Hamilton of Los Angeles, Calif.; 34 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Willa Mae Wilson of Detroit, Mich.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Essie was preceded in death by her husband, George Smith, Sr.; three daughters, Leona Hawkins, Rhett Dawson-Noble and Jessie Mae Jamison; one son, George Smith Jr.; father, Rev. Henry Yancey Gordon Sr; mother, Cleola Gordon (nee Malone); sister, Mittie Davis; brother, Henry Gordon Jr.; granddaughter, Trynka Katherine Simms; and grandson, Scott "Buddy" Spraggins.
Visitation will be Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 2652 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Home Going Services will be Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at 10 a.m. at Church on the North Coast, 4125 Leavitt Road, Lorain, with Pastor Louis Kayatin officiating. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
