Janet Alice Wilcox, 76, of Avon and formerly of Elyria, died peacefully Sunday, September 3, 2017 at Ames Family Hospice House, in Westlake, after a lengthy battle with cancer and Alzheimer's. Janet was born May 3, 1941 in Mercer, Pennsylvania the daughter of Ora and Andrew Albert.

She graduated from Slippery Rock University with a BS in Education and taught at Elyria High School and Lorain County Community College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Elyria and formerly served as the parish secretary. Janet performed with The Folk Medleys playing guitar and singing and enjoyed traveling, gardening, swimming and knitting. She will be remembered for her kindness to people and animals especially stray cats.

Janet married Roy Smith and together they raised their children, Tamara Webb and Troy (Denise) Smith. In 1992 she married the love of her life, George Wilcox. They celebrated 25 years of marriage adding to the family, step-son, David (Maria) Wilcox and step-daughters, Nancy (Michael) Vacante and Laurie (Tim) Mitchell. Together they were blessed with 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Friends will be received Wednesday, September 6, 2017 from 4 to 7 P.M., at Dicken Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 323 Middle Avenue, Elyria. A service will be Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 11 A.M., in the funeral home where The Reverend Dalton D. Love will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
