Jay Edward Barnes, 69 years of age, and a lifetime resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017, at University Hospital of Amherst.

Jay was born February 13, 1948, in Amherst and graduated from Amherst Marion L. Steele High School in 1968. 

Jay was a long distance truck driver for Jefferson Trucking retiring in 2008 after 34 years with the company. He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst. He loved working on cars in his spare time as well as fishing. Jay loved to help his family and friends in any way he could and treasured his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of thirty-seven years Robin Rene Barnes (nee: Alten); his son William J. and Dawn Barnes of Vermilion; his daughter Shannon L. Trifiletti Barnes of Amherst; his mother Lois Barnes of Amherst; his mother-in-law Marcella Henes of Amherst; his grandsons Ryan Barnes, Jacob Barnes, Michael Trifiletti; Joseph Trifiletti, and Christopher Trifiletti; his brother Harold Barnes of California; and his sisters Christine Burman of Amherst and Tamara James of Wooster, Ohio.

Jay was preceded in death by his father James Barnes.

Friends may call Wednesday, December 13, 2017, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Beverly Bammel, pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township, Ohio.
