Maria “Mery” Dagis, 92, returned to her heavenly home on June 24, 2017 after a valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported Mery in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.

Mery was born to homemaker Jacinta Gordiles and musician Julio Gordiles, in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on October 17, 1924. From a young age Mery was a devoted Christian. She knew she could always turn to God and her family in Christ for guidance and support. While attending Iglesia De Dios Penecostal Ebenezer in Lorain, Ohio Mery served as an active member of the women’s group and was heavily involved in prayer services. Mery worked for a hospital in New Jersey for 10 years where she touched the lives of everyone she came in contact with.

On July 30, 1965 Mery married her best friend and wonderful man of God, Alcides Dagis in Brooklyn, New York. She was blessed with a large and loving family. Mery raised four daughters with patience, discipline and humility. From the very beginning, she dedicated her children to God and encouraged them to explore the beauty of the gospels while instilling in them the values of honesty, hard work, and loyalty. Maria zealously helped raise all of her grandchildren as well as great grandchildren while still fighting breast cancer, a stroke, and diabetes.  No matter how many obstacles she faced big or small, she always pushed forward with God and her loving husband and family by her side. She is dearly missed by her loved ones, who celebrate her being at peace with her father in heaven.

Mery is preceded in death by her sisters, Laya, Choni, and her brother Victor; her parents; and her grandson, Angelo Colon. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Alcides; her siblings Siro, Yeya, and Lucas; her daughters Aida, Edith, Irma, and Diana; her grandchildren Joanne, Nancy, Maria, Michelle, Yvonne, Michael, Manoah, Jairo, Adelaida, Stedman, and Imani. And a host of other relatives and friends.

Maria’s home going celebration will be held at the Vine of Hope Church (1310 Colorado Ave. Lorain, OH 44050) on June 28 at 10 AM. The interment will be immediately following the services at the Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery (44805 N Ridge Rd, Amherst, OH 44001). Pastors Kervin and Kelly Flor-Melendes will officiate the service. The family gratefully accepts flowers and donations, prayers, condolences and memories.
