Ruth E. Watts (nee Leidig), age 94, beloved wife of Ernest Watts, passed away Friday November 18, 2016 at 2:00pm at Kingston Assisted Living Residence of Vermilion, where she had been a resident since April 2012. Several months after moving to Kingston, Ernest passed.
Ruth is survived by her devoted step-daughter, Judy Beebe (Norm Kummerlen); grandsons Michael Beebe (Carol Heinz) and her great granddaughter Ana Lucia Heinz of Seattle, WA and David (Anya) Beebe and her great-granddaughters Briana Beebe and Ella Beebe of Denver, CO; and extended family Faith (Jason) Sines of Florida, Michelle (Geof) Kazmierczak of Elyria and great-granddaughter Jillian Kazmierczak.
Ruth initially attended the University of Michigan, where she earned placement in the Martha Cook Honors Dormitory. Her junior year she transferred to Ohio State University where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Special Education. She later returned and earned a Master's Degree in the same field. Ruth was the first Special Education teacher hired by the Elyria Public Schools in 1949. She continued as a dedicated teacher of children of special needs for 36 years, retiring in 1985. She taught at both Ely School and Franklin Elementary Schools.
Ruth was a devoted volunteer for most of her life. She loved to bake and was known to put cookies and homemade bread in her backpack and deliver them to shut-ins. She tutored children in the Ohio Reads Program and after retiring, she volunteered to do taxes for the elderly. Ruth concluded her career in volunteering at Elyria Memorial Hospital working 11 years in the Pizza Hut. However, Ruth was best known for her 10 mile daily walks "to get a little exercise".
Ruth, with her husband Ernie, had been members of First Congregational Church United Church of Christ in Elyria since 1950, when they were married. They were 40+ year members of the Round Table Book Club. The two of them were also avid world travelers and hikers, spending at least nine summers in Switzerland hiking with friends.
Ruth was born in Lakewood, Ohio to the late Daisy and Luther Leidig on February 24, 1922. She with her family moved to Medina in 1933 where she lived until 1949. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Mary and a brother Alfred. Her first husband, Robert Kindig, was killed in WWII; a son from that marriage, John Kindig, died in 1995.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
