Vernon V. Board, Sr. age 98, of Lorain, passed away peacefully at Mercy New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph on the afternoon of Tuesday March 13, 2018. 
Vern was born in Spencer, West Virginia on December 14, 1919, and had been a resident of Lorain since 1954, coming from Kenova, West Virginia.
Mr. Board was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Sergeant in the Pacific Theater; he held a Rifle Sharpshooter Medal and participated in the battle at Guadalcanal.
He joined the American Bridge Division of the United States Steel Corporation and traveled extensively throughout North America working on a multitude of construction projects. Through his hard work and diligence, Vern was ultimately promoted to the role of Superintendant. He retired in 1984 following a career that spanned forty-four years with the company.
Mr. Board was a man of many talents; he was an accomplished woodworker and had a broad understanding of automotive and small appliance repair. He took great pride in sharing his prowess in those areas with his grandchildren. When not engaged in woodworking or repair projects, he enjoyed solving crossword puzzles.
Vern was extremely family oriented and was well known for helping his neighbors and always looking out for the needs of others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife of seventy-six years, Willa (nee Shy); daughter, Willa Szafran, of Lorain; son, Vernon Board, Jr., of Lorain; and son-in-law General Josue Robles, Jr., residing in San Antonio, Texas. He also leaves grandchildren, Melissa Robles of San Antonio, Ryan Szafran (Lisa), of Elyria, and Christopher Szafran, of Lorain; along with great-grandchildren, Andrew and Jeremy Szafran, of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his daughters, Lucy Board and Linda Robles; grandson, Joseph A. Robles; parents, French and Lucy (nee Starcher) Board; and six siblings.
Visitation will be today (Friday), from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel. Reverend Marvin Osborn, pastor of First Baptist Church of Birmingham will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park.
